Anti-Oppression Book Club (Online)

  • The Yoga Tree 90 Washington St Haverhill, MA 01832 (map)

Yogic teachings begin with the principle of Ahimsa or anti-violence. Studying and engaging actively in anti-oppression and anti-violence work is the hearth of our yoga practice.

Our book club is thriving.
Our next book is riveting and paradigm-shifting.
We want you to join us.

We will be reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler alongside a companion podcast "Octavia's Parables" with adrienne maree brown and Toshi Regan. This exceptional, prophetic, science-fiction novel was chosen to be the “Boston Reads” book club book of 2020. Join the ranks of Octavia fans and be transformed.

As a studio and a community, we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter, the Movement for Black Lives, and anti-oppression, feminist movements across the world. In this service, we will continue to offer yogic and community offerings off the mat. In Book Club, we are selecting titles that center critical, artistic, essential perspectives on blackness, whiteness, anti-racism, and anti-oppression. This group will be facilitated, rather than taught or led, by Adelaide Gross as we grow and do the work together to create a more just community at The Yoga Tree and beyond.

When: Our group will meet eight consecutive Thursday evenings from October 29th through December 17th. Meetings will take place via Zoom from 7:00-8:00 pm EST.

Requirements: The reading requirement will be approximately 40 pages per week. Additionally, there is an optional (but encouraged) podcast accompaniment to our reading, ranging from 1-2 hours per week. The podcast “Octavia’s Parables” is a collaboration between adrienne maree brown and Toshi Regan. These scholars offer a black, queer, feminist, and afro-futurist commentary on the essential nature of Octavia’s writing in our contemporary moment in history.

Investment: The cost is $55 for the 8-week series.

BIPOC (black/brown, indigenous, and people of color) community members are welcome to join free of charge. Those in financial hardship are welcome to join free of charge. Please email info@theyogatreestudio.com to inquire.

If you are in a financial position to pay more than $55, please know that your contribution will sponsor someone else in our community. All profits will be donated to SURJ of the Merrimack Valley.
